About
Founded in 2003 under the name “GMU Chess Club,” the organization has grown significantly since. Originally a pocket of players in the Student Union Building 1 cafeteria, the club came to host over 250 players in its first three semesters. At that point it was primarily a social organization and happy at that.
The following year the organization began to take on more ambitious goals. Still involved in University activities on the Fairfax and Arlington campuses, the club began to branch out in to the community. It became involved in after school chess programs education in Fairfax County Public Schools. It competed in the DC-CL (Chess league) and netted B and C class titles. In the Fall of 2009 it hosted an international match against Kazan University, Russia.
The Team has had its own victories as well. Having competed for two years in the D.C. Chess League, MASON Chess was able to bring home the trophy in the B-Class and make a few upsets in the C-Class. Mason Chess is the Virginia Collegiate Chess State Champion and has held the title since 2005.
Perhaps the organization’s most ambitious goal is to establish an endowed scholarship to be distribute by the University, to a qualified student and chess player. It is currently seeking sponsors to help match it’s funds toward this goal. It hopes to have the funds ready for disbursement by 2015.
